Our partner 4sight Health compiled an <a href="https://a.storyblok.com/f/98928/x/39a29a250c/htlh2021_4sightreport_v01.pdf" target="_blank">executive summary</a> of our HLTH 2021 conference, detailing how we returned with gusto to in-person programming following a two-year hiatus with only virtual events and delivered, as always, by staying true to our mission of community, connection and engagement.  HLTH was officially back! Despite extensive COVID safety precautions offered to ensure everyone’s safety, much of the HLTH 2021 experience remained unchanged. We created a unique, action-oriented “marketplace” that advanced dialogue, confronted hard truths and explored solutions to healthcare’s most pressing issues. In the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, our response needs to be focused on reducing illness, providing care and saving lives. While we are doing what’s needed to reduce the spread of coronavirus, especially staying home, let’s not forget our vulnerable neighbors in our communities who also need access to information &amp; care. There are some people who are too often forgotten during national emergencies: those who are homeless, low-income families and immigrants. As most of us are sheltering in place and staying at home to prevent the spread of coronavirus, those who are homeless do not have a home to retreat to. This leaves them more exposed and at higher risk to contract the virus. Additionally, they do not have the same access to soap, water, disinfectants, etc. for basic prevention. This is where local community partnerships are immensely helpful. Partnering during public health emergencies is critically important and time sensitive. We all need to step up and offer assistance wherever we can. At Providence, we have taken the initiative to make donations to local food banks and shelters to ensure they receive the necessary supplies like soap and disinfectant. For now, while the coronavirus continues to spread, please consider donating supplies or funds to your local shelters, food banks and community organizations for the many people in need. Viruses don’t discriminate. We can’t hope to curtail the spread or reduce illness unless everyone in our communities has adequate information and the basic resources for prevention. For immigrants, I fear the U.S.&#39;s public charge rule could hamper efforts to raise awareness and control the spread of the disease. Any time there is a change in immigration policy, we see a decline in health care visits. Particularly in during a pandemic, if patients are not coming to us, that means we must go to them with proactive care. The last thing we need is for people to not renew their Medicaid, not come in and use their food assistance, or not seek our assistance for housing because they’re concerned that public charge is just another effort to put them in the process of deportation. They also may not be receiving the information necessary to keep themselves safe and minimize the spread of the virus. Those who may be fearful of facing consequences for seeking help from medical professionals or support from local officials may not be willing to come forward. One of the most important things we can do is provide immigrants with up-to-date information through a community-focused effort. Marginalized people aren&#39;t living in a box. They&#39;re part of our larger community. If we don’t include everyone in prevention, we will not be effective protecting the public’s health. When it comes to serving these vulnerable populations, the key is to deliver care locally. Some communities have been sharing information and best practices already, which is great. The best way to do it is to ensure that whoever is at the top level of the healthcare organization, system, etc. is tied to the head of the community level members. Care and the screening cannot be managed from headquarters; they must be managed locally. It is imperative to coordinate and get local partners and community members the resources they need.  Corporate and system leaders must understand the work that’s happening on the ground and the barriers frontline providers are working to overcome. At Providence, we have been communicating with the Catholic Health Association and the American Hospital Association to share best practices. We hope that this will help provide consistent messaging and a community-wide effort to mitigate the spread of the disease. These times are unsettling for all of us, but we are in it together and together we will persevere. Benefits leaders have always been nimble, shifting priorities and agendas as needed, but the pandemic and subsequent events forced benefits leaders to take on new roles and amplify efforts. As crisis after crisis unfolded, priorities had to quickly pivot. This year is not likely to provide any relief from the ever-changing landscape of employer benefits, especially with the 6%+ average increase in benefits costs for 2023. Still, there are some ways to stay ahead of the curve. Here are four ways benefits leaders are using insights from benefits data to ride the economic waves and still come out on top: Consistency + innovation There is tension between consistency and innovation. You need consistency so employees know what to expect and rely on, especially in such volatile times. But your future depends on innovation to meet the expectations of people in the future. Finding the right balance of consistency and innovation is key. Benefits leaders can use insights from benefits data to help inform them on what benefits they should keep consistent and what can be re-evaluated and changed to meet shifting needs. In a recent study from Artemis by Nomi Health, one respondent who reported being behind the curve addressed the balancing act of innovation and consistency in benefits offerings by stating, “My organization doesn’t really do this well. In fact, the higher-ups tend to be so focused on consistency that they don’t realize that the offerings don’t fit the needs anymore.” Consistency from core benefits insights that focus on cost and utilization based on medical and pharmacy claims data can create the feeling of stability. Alongside that, insights from assessment of specific care solutions can help inform what programs might no longer be serving the needs of your employees and where you can instead invest to stay ahead of the curve instead of always playing catch up.  Hone Into Employee Feedback  Organizations that believe their benefits offerings outpace their peers excel in collecting and listening to feedback from their employees. Following the ‘Great Resignation,’ companies who had not previously been tuning in to employee feedback started listening. The research saw employee feedback and internal benefits reporting as the top two most relied-upon sources for making benefits decisions. Now, 68% of benefits leaders say their organization uses employee feedback to make benefits decisions. Employee feedback, only when co-related with other valuable benefits data like claims (e.g., medical, pharmacy, vision, dental), retirements (e.g., 401k, HAS), and engagement with specific programs (e.g., diabetes, mental health), presents companies with an opportunity to tailor programs and innovate with unique benefits. Prioritizing Your Priorities  This could sound crazy, but when you start looking at insights from data to help make benefits decisions, you’ll likely find multiple areas of focus rising to the top. In the recent study from Artemis by Nomi Health, the reported top three employee benefits goals of improving employee health, retaining top talent, and enhancing employee satisfaction were neck-in-neck in importance. So how do you prioritize areas that are showing equal priority? That is where you must consider that healthcare journeys are powered by multiple types of interactions and hence the need for a 360-degree view of benefits data to inform the right decisions. Let’s accept that healthcare data is the most complex industry dataset there is, and you cannot simply rely on just an employee survey or a high-cost claimant report from your insurance carrier, or siloed dashboard showing absenteeism related to disability. It is important to be realistic with expectations and a benefits analytics platform that can integrate this complex data and deliver insights that allow you to identify the opportunities specific to the needs of your organization and employees.  Benefits Can Be a Differentiator  No survey is needed to highlight that employee retention and engagement are now firmly established as a core part of the strategic agenda of every organization that wants to grow and transform. It always was, but it is about universal acknowledgment now. The flexibility of integrating various benefits data types into a mature benefits analytics platform has empowered organizations to focus on differentiating strategies that seemed out of bounds previously.  Co-relating disability claims, absenteeism, medical claims, pharmacy claims, and data from a point solution can help put the spotlight on the efficiency of the musculoskeletal (MSK) program and avoid costly surgeries. Social determinants as part of the equity agenda of an organization’s benefits strategy are now possible using insights that encompass domains like access, transportation, and financial literacy. Exploring the impact of environmental concerns in certain geographic locations that are more prone to natural hazards is now possible. As organizations desire to be proactive, insights covering climate change&#39;s impact on cost and member health outcomes can also be measured and forecast. The Future of Benefits in 2023 The waves are still churning in 2023. Economic concerns have everyone on heightened awareness of the need for putting resources in the right places. Benefits leaders know the importance of offering consistency to provide a sense of security, implementing creative solutions to keep talent, creating policies to ensure drive outcomes for their members, and flexing the power of having the right benefits to keep businesses afloat during economic difficulties.  Insights from benefits data can help inform these decisions and give leaders the confidence and tools they need not to get bogged down by an ever-changing tide.

4 Ways Benefits Leaders are Using Data to Stay Ahead of the Curve in 2023

In recent years, the patient experience in healthcare has undergone significant transformation, fueled by technological advancements, policy reforms, and a shift towards patient-centric care. As we reflect on these changes and look out over the next three years, there is a broad range of opportunities across the healthcare delivery ecosystem for stakeholders, including payors, providers, innovators, and others, to further elevate the patient experience. Historical Evolution The last decade witnessed a paradigm shift from a provider-centric to a patient-centric model, emphasizing personalized care, shared decision-making, enhanced communication and the introduction of digital health and engagement. Key milestones include the adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and Telemedicine, which have bridged geographical barriers and fostered a culture of transparency and accessibility. The Digital Leap The healthcare sector embraced digital technology, propelling Telehealth and broader digital health to mainstream prominence. Patients now have better access to care, can manage their health through mobile applications, and benefit from virtual consultations, especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital tools have also facilitated real-time feedback, enabling providers to tweak their services promptly to meet patients&#39; needs. Policy Impetus Policy reforms have also played a crucial role in reshaping the patient&#39;s experience. Ensuring that patient input – inclusive of everything from experiences to perspective and priorities – are considered in the lifecycle of medical devices, technologies, and drugs has been a crucial in the evolution of policy to enable increased access and improved outcomes. Policymakers from Congress to those in regulatory agencies are increasingly facing a rapidly evolving landscape that challenges the status quo of healthcare policy. Laws such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in the US have expanded access to healthcare, while regulatory bodies have pushed for more transparency, quality, and accountability from healthcare providers both in the United States and internationally. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic served as the catalyst for an unprecedented expansion of telehealth and virtual care that enabled patients to access care regardless of functional limitations, restrictions, or condition. As Congress considers the future of telehealth expansions, hundreds of patient organizations have voiced their support for permanent expansion given the transformational impact virtual care has had in improving care, enhancing the patient experience, and utilizing team-based care models. Looking Ahead: 2023 and Beyond As I look out over the balance of 2023 and beyond, I see four key areas of opportunity for the collective healthcare delivery system including:<ol><li>Integrated Care Solutions: The future points towards more integrated care solutions where digital health platforms will be seamlessly intertwined with traditional healthcare services. </li><li>Smart Healthcare Infrastructure: Investments in smart healthcare infrastructure, including AI and data analytics, will provide more personalized and predictive care, enhancing the patient experience. It is important to note that these solutions require digital literacy and access to digital tools such as internet and smart phones. A successful healthcare future must also address the range of patient access to digital solutions. </li><li>Community Engagement: Engaging community stakeholders, including patient and clinician advocacy organizations, local health authorities, and other diverse community partnerships in health initiatives can foster a supportive environment for health innovations and ensure that community needs are met.</li><li>Cross-Sector Collaboration: Establishing partnerships among patient advocates, clinical advocates, healthcare providers, tech companies, and policymakers can drive more holistic solutions for improving the patient experience by accounting for all kinds of patients and patient personas, needs, and conditions. </li></ol> Actionable Steps for Stakeholders To realize a more compelling future for patients, I see five opportunities for those of us who focus on, and look forward to, the day when we no longer talk about what is needed to fix the patient experience, but what is working for the patient journey. These are the steps that can help us bridge that gap:<ol><li>Community Outreach: Engage in equitable and diverse community outreach to understand the unique needs of different populations and tailor healthcare services accordingly. Important considerations in this practice include accessibility, different capabilities, and the needs of caregivers who are often providing day-to-day care. </li><li>Promote Technological Adoption: Encourage the adoption of digital tools which can offer a more personalized and convenient patient experience.</li><li>Invest in Education and Training: Investing in education and training for healthcare professionals can ensure they are equipped to meet the evolving expectations of patients.</li><li>Policy Advocacy: Advocate for policies that promote transparency, accessibility, and quality in healthcare, laying a solid foundation for an enhanced patient experience.</li><li>Tell Stories: Patient storytelling holds a pivotal role in transforming the patient experience by serving as a conduit for empathy, understanding, and actionable insight. It encapsulates the personal narratives of individuals as they navigate the healthcare system, offering a first-hand glimpse into their triumphs, challenges, and expectations. When these stories are shared, whether through social media, community forums, or institutional platforms, they foster understanding through a deeper human connection, transcending statistical data and resonating on a more personal level.
