WalkWise is a smart walker attachment that prevents high-cost episodes for the 10% of U.S. seniors who are most likely to fall: those who use mobility aids. This simple and targeted remote patient monitoring solution detects changes in health status, allows families and caregivers to respond to emergencies, and prevents falls by encouraging walker use compliance. A graduate of the UnitedHealthcare Techstars accelerator program, WalkWise is used by Medicare Advantages plans, ACOs, and PACE (Programs for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) to reduce overall healthcare spending and improve the experience of members and families. 

Our technology does not require a wearable, any daily action, a smartphone, or internet access. When members are enrolled, a care provider or family member discreetly straps the device to a walker wheel, and the batteries last over a year.  Members just need to use their walker, while data and custom notifications are sent to families and providers. 

Falls that otherwise may have gone undetected for hours or days were mitigated for over 10% of WalkWise users last year, likely saving tens of thousands of dollars per episode in additional spending. Physical therapists and nurses use the data to ensure mobility goals are met, promoting leg strength and reducing the risk of developing pressure ulcers. Community care programs have reported decreased fall rates after adopting WalkWise, reducing emergency department and skilled nursing utilization. 

Wearables are not the right solution for this demographic. They do not accurately record activity levels for walker users, and they are commonly forgotten or underutilized in emergencies. Smart-home technologies are expensive to deploy, intrusive, and do not capture walker use levels or any activity outside the home. WalkWise is the only solution that continuously monitors fall risk.
